Navigating Change: Northern Ontario’s Evolving Representation

As the final stages of the 2023 federal riding redistribution process is realized, I would like to take this opportunity to once again inform residents about how representation has evolved to reflect our changing electoral districts. For Northern Ontario, this means the region will now have nine ridings instead of ten. The riding of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing has been absorbed and redistributed into neighbouring districts, including Nickel Belt. As a result, I am running as the Federal Liberal candidate for the newly named riding of Sudbury East–Manitoulin–Nickel Belt. With these changes the riding will become a larger, more diverse and encompass numerous municipalities and First Nation communities, such as communities along Hwy 17 West, including Espanola and Manitoulin Island.

As part of this redistribution, Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt has gained several new areas, including:

First Nations: M’Chigeeng, Sheguiandah, Sheshegwaning, Aundeck-Omni-Kaning, Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, Zhiibaahaasing, and Whitefish River

Municipalities: Espanola, Central Manitoulin, Gordon Barrie Island, Gore Bay

Townships: Assiginack, Baldwin, Billings, Burpee Mills, Cockburn Island, Nairn and Hyman, Sables-Spanish Rivers, Tehkummah and Northeastern Manitoulin & the Islands

Unorganized townships: Burnt Island, Cook’s Dock, Fernlee, Meldrum Bay, Silver Water

Other notable changes from Nickel Belt to Sudbury East–Manitoulin–Nickel Belt riding, has seen a transfer of territory to the Sudbury riding, such as Skead, Falconbridge, Garson, Coniston, Wahnapitae, Wanup (aka Nickel Centre) and the City of Greater Sudbury South end. Please visit Ontario commission - Federal Electoral Districts Redistribution and Elections Canada On-line - Élections Canada en ligne for more information.

Why has this redistribution occurred? Every ten years, Canada reassesses and adjusts federal riding boundaries to reflect population changes captured by the national census. It's important that residents in newly adjusted ridings understand where they now belong and how they can stay connected with resources. With the next federal election on April 28, we encourage everyone to make sure they are registered to vote and aware of any changes to their riding. You can verify your registration, find your new riding boundaries, and learn more about the voting process at www.elections.ca.

While I strongly disagree with the loss of a riding in Northern Ontario, I also firmly advocated against the removal of Nickel Centre from the Nickel Belt riding, due to its alignment with the provincial electoral riding. These changes only add further confusion for the area electorate. My commitment to advocating for our region remains unwavering. If re-elected, I will continue to serve residents and represent the new riding of Sudbury East–Manitoulin–Nickel Belt with the utmost dedication. Northern Ontario deserves strong representation, essential resources, and fundamental guarantees to support its development and growth. I will keep fighting to ensure our region’s voice is heard and that we receive the fair and equitable treatment we deserve in Parliament.

Sincerely,

Marc G. Serré, Federal Liberal Candidate
